UPDATE! Aug. 12, 2015 — Nash Taylor wins silver in Excel 2013…
The Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship is held annually for students of academic institutions teaching Microsoft Office Specialist certification.
Last year, the event attracted 400,000 unique participants from all over the world and even more are expected this year. The categories to compete in are Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
The competitors who will represent Canada at the 2015 world finals have just been chosen and all three are high school students from Westview Secondary School in Maple Ridge, BC.
This is the first time a Canadian high school has produced not just one, but all three national champions.
Nash Taylor (Microsoft Excel 2013 National Champion), Phillip MacBride (Microsoft Word 2013 National Champion), and Trevor Dean (Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 National Champion) have outperformed competition from schools, colleges and universities all over Canada to win the national championship. As a result of being the best in Canada, the trio have also won an all-expenses paid trip to Dallas, Texas on August 10th, 2015 to compete against outstanding students like themselves from across the globe. Their trip is sponsored by Microsoft and Certiport Partner, CCI Learning.
School District No. 42 began offering Microsoft Office Specialist certifications in its schools in 2013. Now hundreds of their students are earning Microsoft Office Specialist certifications and on top of this, becoming national champions.
Westview Secondary IT Teacher, Todd Goodman is very proud of his students’ hard work and dedication saying,
“We are extremely proud of Phillip, Nash and Trevor. Their accomplishments this year earning Microsoft Office Specialist certifications have been stellar. They are all excited at the prospect of representing Canada at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship. These three students are amazing leaders, and will be an inspiration for future students in the program.”
Microsoft Office Specialist certification is available for Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint and OneNote. It is the world’s largest ICT certification and relevant to everyone given that 1.2 billion people use Microsoft Office Applications everyday.
Malcolm Knox, President and CEO of CCI Learning is proud of Westview’s success. He adds,
“Westview began offering Microsoft Office Specialist in August. It is truly astonishing and unprecedented in Canada to have all three champions from the same high school! They now go on to compete against their global peers to see who will be crowned world champion.”
Now the students are busily preparing for the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship where they will compete among the best certified students in the world. The World Championship is also a valuable networking event where students will not only meet their global competitors, but also sponsors and Microsoft partners from all over the world.
We once again congratulate Nash, Phillip, and Trevor on their outstanding accomplishment and invite the nation to cheer on our Canadian champions as they prepare and compete in the 2015 Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship in Dallas, Texas.
