Ontario Student named Canada National Champion in Microsoft Excel

Every year, Microsoft has a competition (the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship) amongst academic institutions who teach Microsoft Office Specialist certification to students around the world.

This year we expect that over half a million students entered this competition. Last year, over 344,000 entered. The categories are Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Around 100 students make it to the world finals from around 90 countries around the world.

We have just finished the Canada National Competition, where we pick the three students with the highest scores who will represent Canada at the World finals. Our National champions for PowerPoint and Word are from British Columbia and Alberta. Our National champion for Excel is Florence Ngan, a double-degree honours student with the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

Microsoft Office Specialist certification is the official Microsoft Learning and certification for Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint and OneNote. It is the world’s largest ICT certification and are relevant to everyone given that over 95% of employers standardize in the Microsoft Office Suite of applications.

Schools like the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and PRISMRESOURCES labs are attacking the problem of the digital divide by providing students the opportunity to train, test, and obtain industry recognized certifications. Certifications boosts resumes, it creates leaders, and provides teachers with the ability to give real life skills and experience. Florence is a highly productive student, has industry recognized certifications, and is ready to compete on a global level. As the National Champion for Excel 2010, Florence wins an all-expenses paid trip to Disneyland where Microsoft hold the finals this year in late July.

Every year CCI Learning sponsors this competition and we fly the winners to the world finals. CCI Learning is the Canadian Solution Provider for Certiport and the Microsoft Academy Service Partner for Canada.
